Background

The Family Planning Association of India was established in the years immediately following Indian independence, at a time when concerns about rapid population growth, maternal health, and women's welfare were becoming part of public discourse. The association was set up by social reformers, medical professionals, and women activists who advocated voluntary family planning as a means of improving the health and economic well-being of families, particularly women and children.

FPAI was a founding member of the International Planned Parenthood Federation, the global federation of family planning associations established in 1952, in which Indian leadership played a prominent role at the founding conference held in Bombay (now Mumbai).

Activities

The association's work spans clinical services, community outreach, and advocacy. Its programmes typically include:

  • Family planning counselling and contraceptive services.
  • Maternal and child health care.
  • Sexual and reproductive health education for adolescents and young people.
  • Awareness campaigns on HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections.
  • Programmes addressing gender equality, safe motherhood, and women's empowerment.
  • Advocacy for rights-based reproductive health policy.

FPAI delivers services through a network of branches and clinics spread across several states of India, working with both urban and rural communities.

Significance

As one of the earliest voluntary bodies in the family planning sector in India, FPAI has historically complemented government programmes such as the National Family Welfare Programme. It has contributed to shaping public understanding of contraception, reproductive rights, and adolescent health in India, and has served as a channel for international cooperation through its IPPF affiliation.
