Overview
EsselWorld is situated on Gorai Island, accessible primarily by ferry from the Gorai jetty in the suburb of Borivali. The park offers a mix of mechanical rides, family attractions, themed zones, and entertainment shows, and has long been a popular destination for school excursions, family outings, and tourists visiting Mumbai.
Background
The park was developed by the Essel Group, a diversified Indian conglomerate founded by Subhash Chandra, whose interests have spanned media, packaging, infrastructure, and entertainment. EsselWorld represented one of the group's early ventures into the leisure and entertainment business in India, at a time when large-scale amusement parks were uncommon in the country.
Water Kingdom
Adjacent to EsselWorld, the Essel Group later developed Water Kingdom, a themed water park. The two parks share a common entry complex and are often marketed and ticketed together as a combined leisure destination.
Location and access
EsselWorld lies across a creek from the Mumbai mainland. Visitors typically reach the park by taking a ferry service from the Gorai jetty, which connects the suburban rail and road network of Mumbai to Gorai Island. The surrounding area also hosts the Global Vipassana Pagoda, a major Buddhist landmark.
Significance
As one of India's first major modern amusement parks, EsselWorld played an important role in popularising the concept of large themed leisure complexes in the country. It has remained a recognised landmark of recreation in Mumbai and has influenced the subsequent development of similar parks elsewhere in India.
