Geography

East Delhi lies entirely on the eastern side of the Yamuna, the river forming its western boundary and separating it from the older walled city and central Delhi. To the east, the district adjoins Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, while to the north and south it shares boundaries with other Delhi districts including Shahdara and parts of South East Delhi. The terrain is part of the alluvial Yamuna floodplain and is largely flat, with portions of the riverbank designated as ecologically sensitive.

Administration

The district is administered by a Deputy Commissioner under the Revenue Department of the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. For revenue and land administration, it is divided into subdivisions and tehsils, with Preet Vihar and Gandhi Nagar among the prominent administrative units. Civic services in the area fall under the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), following the unification of Delhi's three municipal corporations in 2022; prior to that, the area was served by the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC), constituted in 2012.

Background and chronology

  • Areas now within East Delhi grew rapidly after the Partition of India in 1947, when refugee colonies were settled in the trans-Yamuna region.
  • The district was carved out as part of the reorganisation of Delhi's administrative districts under the Government of NCT of Delhi.
  • In 2012, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi was trifurcated, and East Delhi Municipal Corporation was established to govern civic affairs in the trans-Yamuna areas.
  • In 2022, the three municipal corporations of Delhi were re-unified into a single Municipal Corporation of Delhi by an Act of Parliament.
