Background
The college traces its origin to the legacy of Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia (1848–1898), a Punjabi reformer and patron of education whose trust funded several institutions in undivided India, including Dyal Singh College in Lahore. Following the Partition of India in 1947, the trust supported the establishment of a sister institution in Delhi, which later joined the University of Delhi system.
Academics
Dyal Singh College runs degree programmes in disciplines such as English, Hindi, History, Political Science, Economics, Commerce, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Environmental Studies. The college follows the curriculum and examination structure prescribed by the University of Delhi, and admissions are conducted through the centralised admission process of the university.
The institution operates both a regular morning college and an evening college on the same campus, with the evening section catering largely to working students and offering selected undergraduate courses.
Campus and student life
The campus is situated on Lodhi Road in central-south Delhi, in proximity to several cultural and government institutions. Student activities are organised through subject-based societies, cultural societies, the National Service Scheme (NSS), and the National Cadet Corps (NCC). The college also has sports facilities and participates in inter-college tournaments organised by the University of Delhi.
Significance
As one of the older colleges of the University of Delhi, Dyal Singh College is associated with the broader educational philanthropy of the Dyal Singh Majithia Trust, which links institutions in Delhi and Lahore through a shared founding legacy. It is regarded as a notable South Delhi institution offering accessible higher education across multiple streams.
