Dr. Y.S.R. Horticultural University (YSRHU) is a state public university in Andhra Pradesh, India, dedicated exclusively to teaching, research and extension in horticultural sciences. The university was established by the Government of Andhra Pradesh to consolidate horticultural education and research in the state, and it is named after former Chief Minister Y. S. Background

Horticulture is a major component of Andhra Pradesh's agricultural economy, with the state being among India's leading producers of fruits such as mango, banana, citrus, papaya and guava, along with vegetables, spices, plantation crops and floriculture produce. Before the formation of YSRHU, horticultural education and research in the undivided state of Andhra Pradesh were carried out within Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU). To give focused academic attention to horticulture, the state government carved out a separate university dedicated to the discipline, on the model of similar single-discipline state universities elsewhere in India.

Academics and structure

The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in horticultural sciences. Teaching is conducted through constituent colleges of horticulture, with research stations and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) spread across different agro-climatic zones of Andhra Pradesh. Research activities cover fruit crops, vegetables, spices and condiments, plantation crops, medicinal and aromatic plants, floriculture, post-harvest technology, and crop protection.

Extension activities are aimed at transferring technology to farmers through training programmes, demonstrations, advisory services and publications, working in coordination with the state's Department of Horticulture.

Campus

The headquarters at Venkataramannagudem houses the administrative offices, the College of Horticulture and central research facilities. Additional colleges, polytechnics and research stations are located in different districts of the state to address region-specific horticultural priorities.

Significance

YSRHU is one of a small number of universities in India devoted exclusively to horticulture, alongside institutions such as the Dr. Y. S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry in Himachal Pradesh and the University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot in Karnataka. Its establishment reflects the policy emphasis placed by Andhra Pradesh on horticulture as a high-value, employment-intensive segment of agriculture, and the university plays a central role in producing trained horticultural scientists, generating region-specific technologies and supporting farmers in the state.
