Background
The college is named after Dr. N. Mahalingam, a Tamil Nadu-based industrialist and philanthropist associated with the Sakthi Group of companies, whose family trusts have been active in promoting educational institutions in the Pollachi region. Dr. MCET forms part of a cluster of schools and colleges run under these trusts, alongside arts and science colleges and polytechnic institutions in the same locality.
The campus operates as an autonomous institution, which allows it to design its own curriculum, examination patterns, and evaluation systems within the broader framework prescribed by Anna University. Autonomy is generally granted to engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu that have demonstrated academic stability and infrastructural capability.
Academics
Dr. MCET offers Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) and Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) programmes across a range of disciplines. Typical departments at the institution include:
- Computer Science and Engineering
- Information Technology
- Electronics and Communication Engineering
- Electrical and Electronics Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Automobile Engineering
- Mechatronics Engineering
- Textile Technology
- Biotechnology
Postgraduate programmes are offered in selected engineering specialisations as Master of Engineering (M.E.) or Master of Technology (M.Tech.) courses. The college also runs a Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme through its department of management studies. Doctoral research, leading to a Ph.D., is undertaken in recognised research centres affiliated to Anna University.
The autonomous status enables the institution to introduce industry-aligned electives, choice-based credit systems, and project-oriented curricula. Departments typically organise technical workshops, seminars, and guest lectures by academicians and industry professionals.
Campus and facilities
The campus is set on a sizeable site on the outskirts of Pollachi, with academic blocks, departmental laboratories, libraries, and hostels for boys and girls. Common facilities at the college include:
- Specialised laboratories for each engineering department
- A central library with print and digital resources
- Computer centres with internet connectivity
- Seminar halls and auditoriums
- Sports grounds and indoor games facilities
- Transport services connecting the campus to Pollachi, Coimbatore and surrounding towns
- Canteen and student amenities
The college maintains a placement and training cell that coordinates campus recruitment, internships, and skill-development programmes. Soft-skills training, aptitude coaching, and technical certification courses are commonly offered to students in their pre-final and final years.
Admissions
Admission to undergraduate engineering programmes is based on the rules framed by the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Directorate of Technical Education. Seats are allocated through the single-window counselling process, commonly known as Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA), which uses Class 12 marks in the relevant subjects for ranking. A
