Background
The university was established to meet the higher-education needs of the Marathwada region, which had historically been part of the princely state of Hyderabad before its integration with India. After the linguistic reorganisation of states and the formation of Maharashtra, a dedicated university for the region was created at Aurangabad. It functions as an affiliating university, with a large number of colleges across the Marathwada districts coming under its jurisdiction, in addition to running its own postgraduate departments and research centres on campus.
History and chronology
- The institution was originally founded as Marathwada University at Aurangabad.
- A long-running public movement, known as the Namantar Andolan, demanded that the university be renamed in honour of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar.
- In 1994, following the resolution of the Namantar agitation, the university was officially renamed Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University.
- A sub-campus of the university was later established at Osmanabad to serve students in the southern part of the Marathwada region.
Academics and structure
The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, M.Phil. and doctoral programmes through its faculties, which typically include arts, humanities, social sciences, commerce, science and technology, management, law, education and interdisciplinary studies. Teaching and research are organised through university departments on the main campus, while a wide network of affiliated colleges across the region delivers undergraduate education and selected postgraduate courses.
Campuses
- Main campus: Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad), housing administrative offices, academic departments and central facilities such as the library and examination wing.
- Sub-campus: Osmanabad, with departments offering selected postgraduate and research programmes.
Significance
The renaming of the university is regarded as a landmark moment in the social history of Maharashtra. The Namantar Andolan, led by Dalit activists and supported by writers and political leaders, became a defining episode in the post-Independence struggle for Dalit identity and recognition, and the eventual renaming in 1994 is seen as a symbolic acknowledgement of Dr. Ambedkar's legacy. As an institution, the university plays a central role in higher education, research and rural outreach in Marathwada, a region that has historically lagged behind western Maharashtra in educational infrastructure.
