Background
The university was established by the Government of Andhra Pradesh to expand access to higher education in the Uttarandhra region, which comprises Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam districts. Before its creation, colleges in the area were largely affiliated with Andhra University, Visakhapatnam.
