Early Career
Dutta entered Hindi cinema in 1994 with Ishq Mein Jeena Ishq Mein Marna. She followed this with a lead role in the 1995 drama Veergati. Her early breakthrough came in Punjabi cinema with the 1999 film Shaheed-e-Mohabbat Boota Singh, in which she played Zainab, a Muslim wife separated from her Sikh husband against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition of India. The role drew significant attention to her work outside the Hindi mainstream.

Dutta built a substantial body of work as a supporting actress in Hindi cinema during the 2000s and 2010s.
