Background

The Walt Disney Company began direct engagement with the Indian market in the 1990s through licensing of consumer products and the launch of localised television programming. Over time, this presence expanded through acquisitions and joint ventures, culminating in the establishment of Disney India as a comprehensive media operation covering production, distribution, and digital services.

History

Early presence

Disney's initial Indian footprint was built around branded merchandise, comics, and the dubbing of animated features into Hindi and other Indian languages. Animated films from Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar were released in multiple Indian languages, broadening the company's reach beyond English-speaking audiences.

Acquisition of UTV

In 2012, Disney completed the acquisition of UTV Software Communications, an Indian media and entertainment group founded by Ronnie Screwvala. The deal gave Disney a major foothold in Hindi film production, television channels including Hungama TV and UTV Bindass, and a games and digital business. Disney later phased out the UTV branding from several of its operations.

Hindi film production

Through UTV Motion Pictures and later Disney-branded production, the company was associated with several Hindi-language films. Disney subsequently scaled back its India-based live-action film production, refocusing on global tentpole releases dubbed for the local market.

Fox acquisition and Star India

The 2019 global acquisition of 21st Century Fox's entertainment businesses brought Star India into Disney's portfolio. Star India operates a large bouquet of general entertainment, sports, and regional language television channels, including the Star Plus, Star Sports, Star Vijay, Star Maa, and Asianet networks. The acquisition made Disney one of the largest media companies operating in India by both reach and revenue.

Disney+ Hotstar

Hotstar, the streaming service originally launched by Star India in 2015, was rebranded as Disney+ Hotstar in 2020 to incorporate the global Disney+ catalogue. The service became one of the largest over-the-top platforms in India, in part due to its rights to stream the Indian Premier League and other major cricket events.

Reliance joint venture

In 2024, The Walt Disney Company and Reliance Industries announced an agreement to combine Disney's Star India business and Reliance's Viacom18 media operations into a joint venture. Under the terms of the agreement, Reliance holds a controlling stake in the merged entity, while Disney retains a significant minority interest. The combination brought together a wide portfolio of television channels and the Disney+ Hotstar and JioCinema streaming services.

Operations

  • Television: A multi-language portfolio of entertainment, sports, movies, and news channels under the Star network.
  • Streaming: Disney+ Hotstar offering Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic content alongside Indian films, series, and live sports.
  • Studios: Theatrical distribution of Walt Disney Studios releases, dubbed and subtitled in Indian languages.
  • Consumer products: Licensing of Disney, Marvel, and Pixar characters for merchandise, publishing, and promotions.
  • Sports broadcasting: Television and digital rights to cricket and other sports through Star Sports.

Significance

Disney India represents one of the largest international media investments in the country and has played a notable role in the consolidation of the Indian television and streaming industries. Its operations link Hollywood content distribution with Indian-language production, and through the Star and Hotstar platforms it has been central to the commercial broadcasting of Indian cricket.
