Background

Mongia was born in Chandigarh and rose through age-group and domestic cricket in Punjab. He established himself in the Punjab Ranji Trophy side in the late 1990s, earning a reputation as a dependable left-handed batsman capable of building innings in the middle order, while also offering a containing spin option.

International career

Mongia made his One Day International debut for India in 2001. He was part of the Indian squad that reached the final of the 2003 Cricket World Cup in South Africa, where India finished as runners-up to Australia. He featured intermittently in India's ODI side over the next few years and also played a Twenty20 International for India.

One of his most noted performances came against Zimbabwe at Guwahati in 2002, when he scored a big century batting in the middle order, an innings that drew wider attention to his all-round capabilities.
