Overview

Diljit Dosanjh (born 6 January 1984) is an Indian-born American singer, actor and film producer associated with Punjabi and Hindi cinema. Beginning his musical career in 2002, he rose to prominence with a string of Punjabi-language albums in the 2000s before transitioning to acting in Punjabi films and later in Bollywood. He is among the most commercially successful figures in contemporary Punjabi entertainment, with several of his films ranking among the highest-grossing Punjabi releases.

Background

Dosanjh hails from Dosanjh Kalan, a village in the Jalandhar district of Punjab. He launched his career in the Punjabi music industry in 2002.

Music career

Dosanjh gained early recognition in Punjabi music with the albums Smile (2005) and Chocolate (2008). His collaboration with Yo Yo Honey Singh on The Next Level (2009) was a major commercial success and helped establish him as a leading figure in mainstream Punjabi pop.

His music has since featured on multiple international music charts, including the Canadian Albums Chart, the UK Asian chart maintained by the Official Charts Company, and the New Zealand Hot Singles. In 2020, he entered Billboard's Social 50 chart.

Dil-Luminati Tour

In 2024, Dosanjh announced the Dil-Luminati Global tour. In Europe, the tour included shows in Paris, England, Ireland, Italy and the Netherlands. The Indian leg covered Delhi, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Pune, Kolkata, Bangalore, Indore, Chandigarh and Guwahati.

Acting career

Dosanjh made a cameo appearance in the Punjabi film Mel Karade Rabba (2010) before debuting as a leading actor in The Lion of Punjab (2011). Several of his subsequent Punjabi films, including Jatt & Juliet 2, Sajjan Singh Rangroot, Honsla Rakh and Jatt & Juliet 3, are counted among the highest-grossing Punjabi films in history.

He made his Bollywood debut in 2016 with the crime thriller Udta Punjab, for which he received the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut and a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. He earned a second nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category for Good Newwz (2019).

Television

Dosanjh has served as a judge across three seasons of the reality show Rising Star.
