Dibrugarh University

Dibrugarh University is a collegiate public state university located in Dibrugarh, in the Indian state of Assam. Established on 1 July 1965, it is the second oldest university in Assam and the wider North East India region. The university is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities and the Association of Indian Universities, and is recognised by the University Grants Commission.

Background

Dibrugarh University was set up under the provisions of the Dibrugarh University Act, 1965, which was enacted by the Assam Legislative Assembly. Its creation marked a significant expansion of higher education in upper Assam and the North East. The mathematician Bhoj Raj Seth, formerly associated with the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, was appointed as its first Vice-Chancellor on the initiative of Dev Kant Barooah, then the Education Minister of Assam.

Academic structure

Through an ordinance passed on 17 July 2019 (Resolution No. 44), the academic organisation of the university was structured around seven distinct Faculties of Studies. The university comprises:

  • 16 Centres of Studies
  • The Dibrugarh University Institute of Engineering and Technology
  • An exclusive Centre for Distance and Online Education

In addition to teaching and research conducted on campus, the university serves as the affiliating body for 177 colleges and institutes (as of September 2022) located across ten districts of Assam.
