Background

Pandove was born in 1974 into a cricketing family in Patiala, Punjab. His father, Bishan Bedi's contemporary administrator M. P. Pandove, was a long-serving figure in the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Cricket was therefore a part of his upbringing from an early age, and he came through the Punjab schools and age-group circuit.

Cricket career

Pandove drew national attention as a schoolboy batsman in the late 1980s, scoring heavily in inter-school and zonal age-group tournaments. He represented Punjab at successive junior levels and earned selection to India's age-group sides. By the age of sixteen he had been promoted to the Punjab Ranji Trophy squad, becoming one of the youngest first-class cricketers from the state.

His batting was marked by a sound technique against pace and spin, an unusually mature temperament for his age, and an ability to build long innings. Contemporaries and selectors regarded him as a likely future India player.
