Background

The college was set up as part of the Government of Assam's effort to broaden the spread of engineering education beyond the older institutions concentrated in the Guwahati and Jorhat regions. Dhemaji, situated on the north bank of the Brahmaputra, had historically lacked a dedicated engineering institution, and the college was conceived to serve students from Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, and the neighbouring areas of Arunachal Pradesh.

Academics

The institution focuses on undergraduate Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programmes in core branches of engineering. Admission to the programmes is conducted through the centralised counselling process for engineering colleges in Assam, which uses qualifying scores from the relevant national and state-level entrance examinations.

Campus and location

The campus is situated in Dhemaji district in upper Assam, a region characterised by the floodplains of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries. The location places the college within the wider educational ecosystem of north-bank Assam, alongside institutions in Lakhimpur and Sonitpur.

Significance

As a state government engineering college in a relatively under-served region, Dhemaji Engineering College contributes to local capacity-building in technical fields and provides an accessible option for students from upper Assam and adjoining tribal districts. It forms part of Assam's strategy of decentralising technical education to support regional development.
