Devsar

Devsar is a town and human settlement located in the Kulgam district of the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It lies in the southern part of the Kashmir Valley and serves as the headquarters of the Devsar tehsil and the Devsar block within the district administrative framework.

Geography

Devsar is situated in the southern Kashmir Valley, an area characterised by alluvial plains drained by tributaries of the Jhelum river system and surrounded in the wider region by the Pir Panjal range. The locality forms part of the rural and semi-urban belt of Kulgam district, with agriculture, horticulture (notably apple and other temperate fruits), and paddy cultivation being prominent features of the local landscape.

Administration

Devsar functions as a tehsil within Kulgam district, one of the administrative subdivisions created to improve the delivery of revenue, civic, and developmental services. As a community development block, it also coordinates rural development programmes implemented across its constituent villages.

The Devsar Assembly constituency is part of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly and falls within the Anantnag parliamentary constituency for elections to the Lok Sabha.

Background

Kulgam district, of which Devsar is a part, was carved out of the erstwhile Anantnag district in 2007 as part of an administrative reorganisation aimed at decentralising governance in the Kashmir Valley. Following the reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019, the area became part of the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

Significance

Devsar's significance lies primarily in its administrative role as a tehsil and block headquarters, making it a local centre for revenue records, governance, and rural development activities for surrounding villages. The wider Kulgam region is known for its agrarian economy, with horticulture playing a substantial role.
