Domestic career

Padikkal made his first-class debut for Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy and his List A debut in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He has been a consistent run-scorer for Karnataka in domestic limited-overs cricket, including the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, often opening the innings.

Indian Premier League

Padikkal was signed by Royal Challengers Bangalore and made his IPL debut in the 2020 season held in the United Arab Emirates. He had an impressive debut campaign as an opening batsman, forming successful partnerships at the top of the order, and was named the Emerging Player of the season.

He continued with RCB in the 2021 season, during which he scored a century against Rajasthan Royals. Ahead of the 2022 mega auction, he was bought by Rajasthan Royals, with whom he reached the IPL final that year. He was subsequently traded to Lucknow Super Giants and later returned to the RCB franchise (Royal Challengers Bengaluru).

International career

On the back of his strong domestic and IPL performances, Padikkal was selected for the India squad. He made his Twenty20 International (T20I) debut for India during the home series against Sri Lanka in 2021. He later earned a Test cap, making his Test debut for India during the away series in South Africa, where he scored a half-century in his first Test innings.

Style and significance

Padikkal is known for his fluent stroke play, particularly through the off-side, and his ability to construct innings as an opener in white-ball formats. He is part of a generation of young Indian batters who emerged through the IPL pathway alongside domestic cricket, and he has been viewed as a long-term option in India's limited-overs setup.
