Background

Gandhi developed his cricket in Kolkata and rose through the Bengal age-group and senior structure to establish himself as a dependable top-order batsman in the Ranji Trophy. His consistent run-scoring in domestic competition through the 1990s brought him into contention for higher honours and eventually selection to the senior India side.

International career

Gandhi made his debut for India in international cricket in 1999. He played in both Test and One Day International formats, opening the batting in the company of senior Indian batsmen of the era. His international appearances were limited to a brief period before he returned to focus on domestic cricket with Bengal.

Domestic career

For Bengal, Gandhi was a long-serving opener in the Ranji Trophy and other domestic tournaments organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He featured in Bengal's middle and upper-order plans across multiple seasons and was part of squads competing in the Duleep Trophy and Deodhar Trophy as part of zonal selections from the East Zone.

After playing

Following his retirement from active cricket, Gandhi moved into selection and coaching roles within Indian cricket. He served as a member of the senior national selection committee of the BCCI, contributing to the selection of India teams across formats. He has also been associated with coaching and mentoring assignments in the Bengal cricket setup and at the National Cricket Academy.

Significance

Although his international playing career was brief, Gandhi is regarded as one of the consistent domestic openers produced by Bengal in the post-1990s era and is among the cricketers from the state to have featured for India. His later contribution as a national selector connects him to the institutional side of Indian cricket administration.
