Background

The college was established in the years following the partition of India, initially serving students from displaced families who had settled in the newer colonies of South Delhi. Over time it grew into one of the larger colleges of the University of Delhi's South Campus zone, drawing students from across the National Capital Region.

Academics

Deshbandhu College offers undergraduate honours and programme courses in subjects spanning the humanities, social sciences, commerce and natural sciences. Departments commonly include English, Hindi, History, Political Science, Economics, Commerce, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and Computer Science. The college also offers postgraduate courses in select disciplines under the University of Delhi's curriculum framework.

Admissions

Admission to undergraduate courses follows the centralised admission process of the University of Delhi, which in recent years has been based on scores from the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) conducted by the National Testing Agency.

Campus and student life

The campus in Kalkaji houses classroom blocks, departmental laboratories, a library, a sports ground and facilities for cultural and academic societies. Student activities are organised through subject-based associations, debating and dramatics societies, the National Service Scheme (NSS), the National Cadet Corps (NCC) and an annual cultural festival.

Significance

As one of the older colleges in the southern part of Delhi, Deshbandhu College has played a role in expanding access to higher education in the trans-Yamuna and South Delhi neighbourhoods. Its naming after Chittaranjan Das links it to the broader tradition of Delhi University colleges commemorating figures from the Indian freedom movement.
