City context

Nagpur was founded in 1702 by the Gond King Bakht Buland Shah of Deogarh, and later became part of the Maratha Empire under the Bhonsale dynasty. In the 19th century, it was taken over by the British East India Company and made the capital of the Central Provinces and Berar. Following the first re-organisation of states and the informal Nagpur Pact, the city was designated the second capital of Maharashtra.

Nagpur has been proposed as one of the Smart Cities in Maharashtra and is recognised for its performance in livability, greenery, public transport, and health care indices. The city is also significant as a centre for the Dalit Buddhist movement and is home to the Deekshabhoomi, as well as the headquarters of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
