Location and setting

The school is situated in Hyderabad, which occupies about 650 km2 (250 sq mi) on the Deccan Plateau along the banks of the Musi River, in the northern part of South India. The city has an average altitude of 536 m (1,759 ft), with much of its terrain hilly and dotted with artificial lakes, including the historic Hussain Sagar in the north of the city centre.

According to the 2011 census of India, Hyderabad is the fourth-most populous city in India, with about 6.9 million residents within city limits and 9.7 million in the metropolitan region. The city's central position between the Deccan Plateau and the Western Ghats, together with sustained industrialisation through the 20th century, has attracted major research, manufacturing, educational and financial institutions to the city.

Historical context of Hyderabad

Hyderabad was established in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah of the Qutb Shahi dynasty to extend the capital beyond the fortified Golconda. The city was annexed by the Mughals in 1687. In 1724, Asaf Jah I declared sovereignty and founded the Asaf Jahi dynasty, also known as the Nizams, who made Hyderabad their imperial capital from 1769 to 1948. The city was annexed by the Indian Union in 1948 and continued as the capital of Hyderabad State until the States Reorganisation Act of 1956, after which it became the capital of Andhra Pradesh. In 2014, Andhra Pradesh was bifurcated to form the state of Telangana, and Hyderabad served as joint capital of the two states until 2024.

Educational environment

Since the 1990s, Hyderabad has emerged as an Indian hub of pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and information technology, supported by special economic zones such as Hardware Park and HITEC City. The growth of these knowledge-intensive sectors has expanded demand for schooling and contributed to the development of institutions catering to families employed in the city's research and IT industries.
