Location and setting

The school is situated in Chennai, which lies on the Coromandel Coast along the Bay of Bengal in southern India. Chennai is the capital and largest city of Tamil Nadu and is administered by the Greater Chennai Corporation, the second oldest municipal corporation in the world after the City of London Corporation. The city was officially renamed from Madras to Chennai in 1996.

Chennai lies on the predominantly flat Eastern Coastal Plains and experiences a tropical climate with high humidity. The city receives most of its rainfall during the Northeast monsoon, when cyclones are common.

Regional context

As per the 2011 Indian census, Chennai is the sixth-most-populous city in India and forms the fourth-most-populous urban agglomeration. Tamil is the most widely spoken language in the city, with Madras Bashai being a distinctive local variation.

The city is also a major hub for education, healthcare, and the Tamil-language film industry, and has been described as "India's health capital".
