Delhi Public School Bengaluru refers to schools affiliated with the Delhi Public School Society that operate in Bengaluru, the capital of the Indian state of Karnataka. Location and setting

The schools are situated in Bengaluru, which serves as the capital and largest city of Karnataka. The city lies towards the southern end of the Deccan Plateau at an altitude of approximately 900 m (3,000 ft) above sea level. As per the 2011 Census of India, Bengaluru had a population of 8.4 million, making it the third most populous city in India and the most populous in South India. The city is widely known as India's "Garden City" on account of its parks and greenery.

Civic and educational context

Bengaluru hosts several prominent institutes of higher education and of national importance, and is a major centre for information technology, often described as the "Silicon Valley of India". Manufacturing also contributes substantially to the city's economy, with several state-owned units headquartered there. The city's growth as a technology and education hub has shaped the demand for schooling across its older Pete area and the former Cantonment, which merged under a single urban administration in 1949.

Historical background of the city

The first recorded mention of the name "Bengaluru" appears in an old Kannada stone inscription dated 890 CE, found at the Nageshwara Temple in Begur. The region was successively ruled by the Western Ganga dynasty, the Chola Empire, the Hoysala kingdom and the Vijayanagara Empire. In 1537 CE, Kempe Gowda I established a mud fort considered the foundation of the modern city. Following India's independence in 1947, Bengaluru became the capital of Mysore State, retaining that status when the state was reorganised in 1956 and renamed Karnataka in 1973.
