Geography
Dankuni is situated on the western bank of the Hooghly River basin, a short distance west of Kolkata. The terrain is part of the lower Gangetic plain and is interspersed with low-lying wetlands, several of which form the Dankuni Wetlands, an important ecological zone for migratory birds and aquatic vegetation. The town is bordered by Chanditala, Serampore, and Uttarpara-Kotrung in adjoining blocks of Hooghly district.
Transport
Road
Dankuni lies at a key junction where the Durgapur Expressway (NH 19, formerly NH 2) meets the Delhi Road and the Mumbai Road (NH 16, formerly NH 6). The Belghoria Expressway connects Dankuni with the Kalyani Expressway and the Kolkata Airport via the second Hooghly bridge corridor, making it a strategic logistics hub.
Rail
Dankuni Junction railway station is operated by the Eastern Railway zone of Indian Railways. It lies on the Howrah–Bardhaman chord line and is also connected by the Dankuni–Sealdah and Dankuni–Bandel chord links. The Dankuni marshalling yard is one of the largest freight yards in eastern India and handles a significant volume of goods traffic on the Eastern and South Eastern Railway networks.
Economy and industry
Dankuni hosts a large industrial belt with manufacturing units, warehouses, and logistics parks taking advantage of its highway and rail connectivity. The Dankuni Coal Complex, set up by Coal India Limited's subsidiary South Eastern Coalfields, has historically operated low-temperature carbonisation facilities producing coke, coal gas, and chemical by-products. In recent years the area has seen growth in real estate and township projects driven by its proximity to Kolkata.
Civic administration
The city is administered by Dankuni Municipality, which manages local civic services including water supply, sanitation, roads, and street lighting. The municipality falls within the jurisdiction of the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority for regional planning purposes.
Demographics
Bengali is the predominant language, with Hindi widely spoken among migrant workers in the industrial sector. Hinduism is the majority religion, with significant Muslim and smaller Christian and Jain communities.
Education
Dankuni and its surrounding wards host a number of Bengali- and English-medium schools affiliated to the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education, and CBSE. The town is also home to colleges affiliated to the University of Calcutta and other state universities, with Kolkata's higher-education institutions accessible by rail.
