Craig Douglas McMillan (born 13 September 1976) is a New Zealand cricket coach and former international cricketer who represented New Zealand in all three formats of the game. A right-handed batsman and useful right-arm medium pace bowler, he played domestic first-class cricket for Canterbury and also had county cricket stints in England with Hampshire and Gloucestershire.

Background

McMillan emerged through New Zealand domestic cricket with Canterbury, the Christchurch-based provincial side, where he established himself as an attacking middle-order batsman capable of contributing with medium pace bowling. His all-round usefulness saw him become a regular member of the New Zealand national side across Tests, One Day Internationals and Twenty20 Internationals.

Career

International cricket

McMillan played all forms of the international game for New Zealand. The most significant team honour of his career came when he was part of the New Zealand squad that won the 2000 ICC KnockOut Trophy, the tournament later known as the ICC Champions Trophy, held in Kenya.

County cricket

In England, McMillan turned out as an overseas professional for two County Championship sides, Hampshire County Cricket Club and Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, gaining further experience in English conditions.

Coaching

After retiring as a player, McMillan moved into coaching and served as the batting coach of the New Zealand national cricket team, working with the country's senior batsmen.

Media work

McMillan has also worked as a cricket commentator, including stints with Sky Network Television in New Zealand and Star Cricket.

Significance

McMillan is remembered as an aggressive middle-order batsman of his era for New Zealand and as a member of the country's only ICC global one-day trophy winning side, the 2000 KnockOut Trophy team. His subsequent transition into coaching and commentary has kept him involved with New Zealand cricket beyond his playing days.
