Background
Ramaswami belonged to the Cotah family of the Madras Presidency in southern India. He pursued sport during the late colonial period, when Indian cricketers and tennis players competed in domestic tournaments organised on regional and communal lines, as well as in matches against touring sides from England and other parts of the British Empire.
Tennis career
Before his Test cricket appearances, Ramaswami represented India in the Davis Cup, the premier international team competition in men's tennis. His Davis Cup appearances placed him among the small group of Indians to play the competition in its early decades.
Cricket career
Ramaswami played first-class cricket in India, appearing for sides associated with the Madras region. He was selected for the Indian team that toured England in 1936 under the captaincy of the Maharajkumar of Vizianagram. On that tour he made his Test debut at the age of around 40, making him one of the older players to debut in Test cricket. He played two Test matches against England during the series.
Significance
Ramaswami is one of the rare Indian sportsmen to have represented the country in two different sports at the highest level — Test cricket and Davis Cup tennis. His career is often cited in histories of Indian sport for this dual distinction and as part of the early generation of Indians to compete internationally before independence.
