Cop Universe (Rohit Shetty)

Overview

The Cop Universe, also referred to as the Rohit Shetty Cop Universe, is an Indian Hindi-language shared cinematic universe of action films created and directed by filmmaker Rohit Shetty. The franchise centres on fictional Indian police officers who tackle organised crime, terrorism and corruption, often with large-scale action set-pieces, heightened drama and crossover appearances. It is one of the earliest sustained attempts at a shared cinematic universe in Hindi cinema.

Background

Rohit Shetty, known for action-comedies such as the Golmaal series, launched the universe in 2011 with Singham, an official Hindi remake of the Tamil film of the same name directed by Hari. The film starred Ajay Devgn as the upright Goan police officer Bajirao Singham. Its commercial success led to a sequel, Singham Returns (2014), establishing a recurring lead character.

The universe concept took clearer shape with Simmba (2018), in which Singham appeared in a key sequence supporting the new protagonist Sangram Bhalerao, played by Ranveer Singh. Simmba in turn introduced Akshay Kumar as DCP Veer Sooryavanshi in a post-credits scene, foreshadowing the next film. Sooryavanshi (2021) brought all three leads together in an extended climactic sequence, formally consolidating the cop universe.

Recurring characters

  • Bajirao Singham — A Maharashtrian police officer of unwavering integrity, originally posted in Goa. The franchise's anchor character.
  • Sangram "Simmba" Bhalerao — An initially corrupt officer mentored, in spirit, by Singham; reformed after a personal tragedy.
  • Veer Sooryavanshi — Chief of an anti-terrorism squad, central to the counter-terror storyline of Sooryavanshi.
  • Supporting officers — Recurring uniformed characters, often played by actors such as Ashwini Kalsekar and Vinod Khanna's screen lineage of senior officers, populate police stations across the films.

Singham Again (2024) expanded the ensemble to include additional officers played by Deepika Padukone, Tiger Shroff and Arjun Kapoor, drawing a narrative framework loosely inspired by the Ramayana.

Production and style

The films are produced primarily by Rohit Shetty Picturez, with Reliance Entertainment as a frequent co-producer; Simmba was co-produced with Dharma Productions. Stylistic features common across the universe include slow-motion entry shots, exploding vehicles, salutes framed against the national flag or police insignia, and item songs. Karan Malhotra, Sajid–Wajid, Tanishk Bagchi, and others have contributed music across the films, often reworking earlier franchise themes.

Reception and significance

The cop universe has been among the most commercially successful franchises in Hindi cinema in the 2010s and 2020s. Sooryavanshi was notable for being one of the first major Hindi releases after pandemic-era theatre closures in India, opening on 5 November 2021, and is widely credited with helping revive theatrical footfall. Singham Again (2024) released during the Diwali window and continued the franchise's pattern of festival releases.

Critically, the films have drawn mixed responses, with reviewers often praising their scale and star power while questioning their portrayal of policing, vigilantism and due process. Despite this, the franchise has had a strong cultural footprint, with character names, dialogues and the "Aata majhi satakli" catchphrase from Singham Returns entering popular usage.

Television and extensions

Rohit Shetty has also developed police-themed content for streaming, including the web series Indian Police Force (2024) on Amazon Prime Video, starring Sidharth Malhotra. While conceived as a separate property, it shares thematic continuity with the cop universe and features a crossover appearance involving Sooryavanshi.
