Background
Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology was established in 1962 and is one of the older agricultural universities in India. As OUAT expanded into a multi-faculty institution covering agriculture, veterinary science, fisheries, forestry, agricultural engineering and home science, the need for a dedicated unit to deliver supporting instruction in pure sciences, mathematics, statistics, languages and the social sciences led to the formation of a separate college for basic science and humanities on the OUAT campus.
Academics
The college supports the professional curricula of OUAT's other constituent colleges by delivering courses in subjects such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, statistics, biochemistry, botany, zoology, microbiology, English, and economics or extension-related social sciences. In its own right, CBSH offers master's (M.Sc.) and doctoral (Ph.D.) programmes in several of these disciplines, contributing to research output across the university.
Departments
The college is organised into departments aligned with the standard basic-science and humanities disciplines taught within an agricultural university, including:
- Agricultural Biochemistry
- Botany
- Chemistry
- English
- Mathematics
- Microbiology
- Physics
- Statistics
- Zoology
Campus
CBSH is situated on the OUAT campus at Bhubaneswar, sharing facilities including the central library, hostels, laboratories and research farms with the other constituent colleges of the university. The campus lies in the institutional belt of the city, near other major educational and research establishments.
Significance
As the science-and-humanities backbone of OUAT, the college plays a foundational role in the academic life of one of eastern India's principal agricultural universities. Its faculty contribute to teaching at the undergraduate professional level, supervise postgraduate research, and participate in interdisciplinary projects involving agriculture, biotechnology, environmental science and rural development.
