Background

Coca-Cola was first introduced in India in the early 1950s and grew to become one of the most widely sold soft drinks in the country. In 1977, the company exited the Indian market following the enactment of the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act (FERA), which required foreign companies to dilute their equity stake in Indian operations. Coca-Cola declined to comply with the conditions imposed and withdrew from India.

During the years of its absence, the Indian soft drink market was dominated by domestic brands such as Thums Up, Limca, Gold Spot and Campa Cola.

Re-entry and operations

Following the liberalisation of the Indian economy, Coca-Cola returned to India in 1993. As part of its re-entry strategy, the company acquired several leading Indian soft drink brands from Parle Bisleri, including Thums Up, Limca, Gold Spot, Maaza and Citra. These brands continue to be marketed alongside the company's global portfolio.

Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt. Ltd. (HCCB) operates as a major bottling and distribution arm of Coca-Cola in India, running bottling plants across multiple states. In addition, several independent franchisee bottlers are licensed to manufacture and distribute Coca-Cola products in specified territories.

Significance

Coca-Cola India is one of the largest players in the Indian non-alcoholic beverage industry, with a wide manufacturing footprint and an extensive distribution network reaching urban and rural markets. The company has invested in initiatives related to agriculture sourcing (notably for mango pulp used in Maaza), water stewardship, and packaging. Its operations in India have also been the subject of public debate, particularly concerning groundwater usage at certain bottling plants and pesticide residue controversies in the 2000s, which prompted regulatory scrutiny and changes in industry practices.
