Background

After the formation of Chhattisgarh as a separate state in November 2000, the new state government undertook the reorganisation of higher education within its territory. Engineering and technical colleges that had previously been affiliated with universities in undivided Madhya Pradesh required a dedicated technical university within Chhattisgarh. CSVTU was set up to fulfil this role, and was named in honour of the philosopher and monk Swami Vivekananda.

Academics and affiliations

The university coordinates curricula, examinations and degree awards for affiliated colleges across Chhattisgarh in disciplines including engineering and technology, pharmacy, architecture, hotel management and management studies. In addition to its affiliating role, CSVTU runs teaching departments and research programmes at its own campus in Bhilai, offering undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes.

Programmes

  • Bachelor of Engineering / Bachelor of Technology (B.E./B.Tech.)
  • Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm.) and Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.)
  • Master of Technology (M.Tech.) and Master of Pharmacy (M.Pharm.)
  • Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Computer Applications (MCA)
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in engineering, sciences and management

Campus

The university's main campus is situated in Bhilai, a major industrial city in central Chhattisgarh known historically for the Bhilai Steel Plant. The location places CSVTU within one of the state's principal industrial corridors, alongside Durg and Raipur, which has supported industry-linked technical training and placement activity for affiliated colleges.

Significance

As Chhattisgarh's dedicated technical university, CSVTU plays a central role in shaping engineering and technical education standards in the state. It administers common examinations and curricula across affiliated institutions, conducts admissions processes for several professional programmes, and contributes to the regulation and growth of technical higher education in the region.
