Geography

Chennai district lies on the south-eastern coast of the Indian peninsula. It is bordered by Tiruvallur district to the north and west, Kancheepuram district and Chengalpattu district to the south and west, and the Bay of Bengal to the east. The terrain is largely flat coastal plain. The principal rivers are the Cooum and the Adyar, which traverse the district from west to east, along with the Buckingham Canal, which runs north–south parallel to the coast. Marina Beach, one of the longest urban beaches in the world, lies within the district.

Administration

Chennai district is unique in Tamil Nadu in that its boundaries are coterminous with a single municipal corporation, the Greater Chennai Corporation. The district is headed by a District Collector, an officer of the Indian Administrative Service. For revenue administration, the district is divided into taluks, including Egmore-Nungambakkam, Fort-Tondiarpet, Mambalam-Guindy, Mylapore-Triplicane, Perambur-Purasawalkam, Ambattur, Alandur, Madhavaram, Sholinganallur and others added during successive expansions of city limits.

History

The area of present-day Chennai district has its origins in Madras, a settlement that grew around Fort St George, established by the British East India Company in 1640 on land obtained from local Nayak rulers. Madras subsequently became the capital of the Madras Presidency under British rule and, after Independence in 1947, of Madras State, renamed Tamil Nadu in 1969. The city was officially renamed from Madras to Chennai in 1996, and the district name was changed correspondingly.

Originally a compact district covering roughly the historic city, Chennai district was significantly expanded in 2018, when several areas formerly part of Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts—covering the extended jurisdiction of the Greater Chennai Corporation—were merged into it. This expansion brought localities such as Ambattur, Madhavaram, Sholinganallur and parts of Tambaram into the district.

Demographics

According to the 2011 Census of India, conducted before the 2018 expansion, Chennai district had a population of around 4.6 million within its then-existing boundaries, with very high population density. Tamil is the predominant language, with significant minorities speaking Telugu, Urdu, Malayalam, Hindi and English. The district is religiously diverse, with Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Jain and other communities.

Chennai district is one of the largest economic centres in southern India. Major sectors include automobile manufacturing, information technology and IT-enabled services, healthcare, banking and finance, port-based trade, and film production.
