Overview
Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) is a higher education and research institute located in Chennai, India. It was founded in 1989 by the SPIC Science Foundation and offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in mathematics, physics and computer science.
CMI is known for its research in mathematics, with notable work in algebraic geometry, particularly in the area of moduli of bundles. The institute combines teaching with active research across its core disciplines.
The institute was initially housed in an office complex in T. Nagar, in the heart of Chennai. In October 2005, it shifted to a new five-acre campus in Siruseri, on the outskirts of the city. In December 2006, CMI was recognised as a deemed university under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956. Prior to this recognition, its teaching programmes were offered in association with Bhoj Open University, which provided greater flexibility.
