Charanjit Singh

Charanjit Singh (1931–2022) was an Indian field hockey player who represented India in international competition during the 1960s. He is best remembered as the captain of the Indian men's hockey team that won the gold medal at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

Background

Charanjit Singh emerged in Indian hockey at a time when the national team was a dominant force in the global game, having won successive Olympic gold medals from 1928 onwards. He developed his game during the 1950s and progressed into the senior national set-up by the early 1960s.

International career

Charanjit Singh was a member of the Indian squad at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, where India finished with the silver medal after losing the final to Pakistan. The result ended India's long unbeaten run at the Olympics.

Four years later, he led India as captain at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Under his leadership, the Indian team regained the Olympic title, defeating Pakistan in the final to win the gold medal. The victory restored India's pre-eminence in Olympic hockey and remains one of the landmark achievements in the country's sporting history.

Significance

Captaining the side that reclaimed the Olympic gold in 1964 places Charanjit Singh among the notable leaders of Indian hockey. His tenure links the era of India's traditional dominance with the more competitive period that followed, when teams such as Pakistan, the Netherlands, Australia and West Germany rose in international standings.

Later life

After retiring from competitive hockey, Charanjit Singh remained associated with the sport in various capacities. He died in 2022.
