Overview
Chandrakanta is an Indian Hindi-language fantasy television series that began airing on DD National (Doordarshan) in 1994. Loosely based on Devaki Nandan Khatri's celebrated Hindi novel Chandrakanta (1888), the series adapted the romantic and adventurous tale of the princess Chandrakanta and prince Virendra Singh, set against a backdrop of rival kingdoms, ayyars (master spies and tricksters), and tilismi (magical) lore. Devaki Nandan Khatri's Chandrakanta, first published in 1888, is regarded as one of the earliest works of prose fiction in modern Hindi and was instrumental in popularising the Devanagari script among general readers. The novel and its sequel Chandrakanta Santati introduced Hindi audiences to the concept of tilism (an enchanted realm) and the figure of the ayyar, a cunning, shape-shifting agent who serves royal masters.
The 1994 television adaptation, produced and directed by Nirja Guleri, drew on this material to craft a long-running serial blending palace intrigue, sorcery and romance. It was telecast on Doordarshan's national channel during a period when the broadcaster still commanded vast pan-Indian viewership, especially on weekend slots.
Plot
The narrative centres on Chandrakanta, princess of Vijaygarh, and Virendra Singh, prince of the neighbouring kingdom of Naugarh. Their love is opposed by Kroor Singh, a scheming courtier of Vijaygarh, who conspires with Shivdutt, the ruler of the rival state of Chunargarh. The story unfolds through abductions, tilismi quests and the exploits of loyal ayyars on both sides, including Virendra's companions and Chandrakanta's confidante Champa, as the protagonists navigate enchanted forests, secret passages and magical traps.

Production
The series was helmed by director Nirja Guleri, who became closely associated with fantasy storytelling on Indian television. Reception and significance
Chandrakanta became a cultural phenomenon in mid-1990s India, attracting large family audiences during its Sunday morning telecast on Doordarshan. The show's stylised dialogue, distinctive theme music and the menacing catchphrases of antagonists such as Kroor Singh entered popular memory and were widely imitated and parodied. The serial is also credited with popularising the genre of fantasy historicals on Indian television and influencing later adaptations of Khatri's work, including a 2017 version produced for a private satellite channel. It further provided early visibility to actors such as Akhilendra Mishra and Irrfan Khan, who went on to substantial careers in Indian cinema and television.
