Overview
The Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD) is an autonomous research institution in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. Established under the aegis of the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, the Centre conducts research in molecular biology, genomics and allied fields, while also providing DNA fingerprinting and diagnostic services to law-enforcement agencies, the judiciary and the public.

Background
CDFD was set up to address the growing need in India for reliable DNA-based identification techniques in forensic casework, paternity disputes and questions of identity, as well as to build domestic capacity in molecular diagnostics for inherited and infectious diseases. It originated from work on DNA fingerprinting carried out at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad, and was subsequently constituted as an independent institution under the Department of Biotechnology.
Research and activities
The Centre's work spans several broad areas:
- DNA fingerprinting services for courts, police forces, central investigative agencies and private parties, particularly in cases of disputed identity, paternity, immigration and criminal investigation.
- Molecular diagnostics for genetic disorders, including prenatal and carrier testing for conditions prevalent in Indian populations.
- Basic research in areas such as human genetics, microbial pathogenesis, computational biology, structural biology, transcription regulation and chromosome biology.
- Training and education, including a Ph.D. programme in life sciences, with degrees awarded through affiliated universities, along with short-term training for forensic scientists and clinicians.
Academic programmes
CDFD runs a doctoral programme in life sciences, recruiting students through national entrance examinations. Research scholars work across laboratories on topics ranging from molecular oncology and immunology to bioinformatics. The Centre also hosts postdoctoral fellows and short-term project trainees, and collaborates with universities and other research institutes within India and abroad.
Significance
As one of India's principal centres for forensic DNA analysis, CDFD has provided expert testimony and laboratory reports in numerous criminal and civil cases of national importance. Its diagnostic services have made specialised genetic tests available within India, reducing dependence on overseas laboratories. The Centre is also recognised as a national resource for training in molecular biology techniques relevant to forensic science and clinical genetics.
