Background

Ladakh has historically been a centre of Tibetan Buddhist learning, with a network of monasteries that have preserved Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions for centuries. The Central Institute of Buddhist Studies was established to provide a structured, modern academic framework for these traditional studies, allowing students from the Himalayan region and beyond to pursue formal qualifications in Buddhist philosophy alongside conventional subjects.

The institute was originally founded as a school for Buddhist studies and gradually expanded its academic scope. It was later granted the status of a deemed-to-be university by the Government of India on the recommendation of the University Grants Commission, enabling it to award its own degrees.

Academics

CIBS offers programmes spanning school-level traditional education through to doctoral research. Its curriculum typically combines:

  • Buddhist philosophy, including study of Madhyamaka, Pramana, Abhidharma, Vinaya and related treatises.
  • Classical and modern Tibetan language and literature.
  • Sanskrit and Pali.
  • Allied subjects such as Tibetan medicine (Sowa Rigpa), astrology, and traditional arts.
  • Modern academic subjects including English, history, political science and computer applications.

Degrees and diplomas offered have included Shastri (undergraduate), Acharya (postgraduate), and research programmes leading to M.Phil. and Ph.D. qualifications in Buddhist studies and related areas.

Campus and location

The main campus is situated at Choglamsar, on the banks of the Indus river a short distance from Leh town. Choglamsar is also home to a substantial Tibetan refugee settlement and several institutions associated with Tibetan Buddhism, which provides a supportive cultural environment for the institute's work.

Significance

CIBS plays an important role in preserving and transmitting the Buddhist intellectual heritage of the Himalayan region. It draws students from Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, the Tibetan exile community, and neighbouring countries such as Nepal and Bhutan. As one of the few Indian universities dedicated primarily to Buddhist studies, it complements other institutions such as the Central University of Tibetan Studies in Sarnath and the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies network, contributing to research, publication, and the training of teachers and monastic scholars.
