Background
Canara Bank traces its origin to the Canara Hindu Permanent Fund, established in 1906 at Mangalore in the Madras Presidency (in present-day Karnataka) by Ammembal Subba Rao Pai, a lawyer and social reformer. The institution was later renamed Canara Bank Limited as it grew into a full-fledged commercial bank serving the coastal Karnataka region and beyond.
The bank expanded steadily through the first half of the twentieth century, opening branches across South India and gradually building a presence in other parts of the country.
Nationalisation and growth
Canara Bank was among the fourteen major Indian commercial banks nationalised by the Government of India on 19 July 1969 under the leadership of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Following nationalisation, the bank significantly expanded its branch network, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas, in line with the government's policy of priority-sector lending and financial inclusion.
Over the decades that followed, Canara Bank diversified into a range of financial services, including merchant banking, mutual funds, venture capital, factoring, housing finance, and insurance, often through dedicated subsidiaries and joint ventures.
Merger with Syndicate Bank
As part of the Government of India's consolidation of public sector banks, Syndicate Bank was amalgamated into Canara Bank with effect from 1 April 2020. The merger expanded Canara Bank's branch network, customer base, and overall scale of operations, making it one of the larger public sector banks in the country.
Operations
Canara Bank offers a wide range of banking and financial products, including retail banking, corporate banking, agricultural and MSME lending, NRI banking, treasury operations, and digital banking services. It operates a network of branches and ATMs across India and maintains a presence in select international financial centres through overseas branches and representative offices.
The bank is listed on Indian stock exchanges, with the Government of India remaining the majority shareholder.
Significance
As one of India's oldest and largest public sector banks, Canara Bank has played a notable role in the country's banking history, particularly in extending formal credit to rural and priority sectors after nationalisation. Its origins in early twentieth-century Mangalore also link it to the broader history of indigenous banking in coastal Karnataka, a region that produced several of India's early commercial banks.
