Overview
Burdwan Medical College is a public medical college and hospital located in the town of Burdwan in Purba Bardhaman district, West Bengal. The institution traces its origins to a decision taken on 13 July 1907 to establish a hospital in Burdwan, and the college was formally established on 9 November 1910 by the then Governor of Bengal.
In 1969, the institution was brought under the University of Burdwan and was known as Burdwan University Medical College. It was subsequently rechristened as Burdwan Medical College on 4 August 1976. The campus is spread over approximately 253 acres (102 hectares).
The college is regarded as one of the oldest institutions in Asia to teach Western medicine, and it was the first institute to impart instruction in the English language in Burdwan. The associated Bijay Chand Hospital, presently known as Burdwan Medical College & Hospital, is the largest hospital in Purba Bardhaman.
