Buddhavanam is a Buddhist heritage theme park located at Nagarjuna Sagar in the Nalgonda district of Telangana, India. Conceived as a pilgrimage-cum-tourism project, it presents the life of Gautama Buddha, the Jataka tales, and the history of Buddhism in the Krishna river valley, a region historically associated with early Buddhist learning and the Mahayana tradition.

Location and setting
The project is situated near the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam on the Krishna river, an area historically connected with the ancient Buddhist site of Nagarjunakonda. The submerged remains of Nagarjunakonda, once a major centre of Mahayana Buddhism associated with the philosopher Nagarjuna, were partially relocated to a museum on an island in the reservoir during the construction of the dam in the 1950s and 1960s. Buddhavanam was planned in the same cultural landscape to complement these heritage assets.
Layout and themes
The park is organised into thematic segments that narrate different aspects of Buddhism. The principal zones include:
- Buddhacharitavanam — depicting the life of Siddhartha Gautama from birth to mahaparinirvana through sculpture and tableaux.
- Jatakavanam — illustrating selected Jataka tales recounting the previous births of the Buddha.
- Dhyanavanam — a meditation zone designed for visitors and practitioners.
- Mahastupa — a large central stupa drawing on the architectural vocabulary of early Buddhist stupas such as those at Amaravati and Nagarjunakonda.
- Bodhisattvavanam — featuring representations of Bodhisattvas of the Mahayana tradition.
- Dhamma Chakra — symbolising the Buddha's first sermon at Sarnath.
Background and development
Buddhavanam was conceived during the period when Andhra Pradesh and later Telangana sought to develop Buddhist circuits to attract domestic and international pilgrims, particularly from Buddhist-majority countries in East and Southeast Asia. The project was pursued by the state tourism authorities as part of a broader effort to highlight the Buddhist legacy of the Krishna valley, which includes sites such as Amaravati, Nagarjunakonda, Phanigiri, and Nelakondapalli.
After the formation of Telangana in 2014, the project came under the Telangana State Tourism Development Corporation, which carried the work forward to completion and opening for visitors.
Significance
Buddhavanam is significant as one of the larger thematic Buddhist parks developed in southern India. It functions both as a tourist destination and as an interpretative centre for the Buddhist heritage of the Deccan, complementing nearby heritage attractions such as the Nagarjunakonda museum, the Ethipothala Falls, and the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam itself. The site is also positioned within national and international Buddhist tourism circuits.
