Background

The Braithwaite, Burn & Jessop Construction Company was formed by bringing together the construction divisions of three historic engineering firms with deep roots in eastern India:

  • Braithwaite & Co. — a wagon and structural engineering firm with works at Clive Works (Kolkata) and other locations.
  • Burn & Co. — one of the oldest engineering firms of British India, known for its works at Howrah.
  • Jessop & Co. — among the earliest engineering establishments in Calcutta, with a long association with railway and bridge work.

BBJ was constituted as a separate construction entity to consolidate the bridge-building and erection capabilities of these firms under a single corporate umbrella, while the parent companies continued to operate in their respective core businesses.

Activities

The principal lines of business of BBJ have included:

  • Fabrication and erection of railway and road steel bridges, including girder bridges for Indian Railways.
  • Construction of heavy steel structures.
  • Site erection of bridges across major rivers in India, often involving launching of long-span girders.
  • Allied civil and structural engineering services for public sector clients.

Significance

As a specialised PSU in the bridge construction sector, BBJ has played a role in supporting the expansion and modernisation of the Indian Railways network and other public infrastructure. Together with its sister enterprises in the heavy engineering sector, the company represents a continuity of the engineering traditions established in Bengal during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
