Background
The university traces its origins to Brainware, an institute of computer training and higher education that operated in West Bengal for several years before the establishment of the university. Building on this earlier presence in technical and computer education, the promoters set up a full-fledged university to expand the range of academic programmes offered, particularly in technology, management and applied sciences.
As a state private university, Brainware University is empowered by the Government of West Bengal to award its own degrees, while operating within the regulatory framework of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and, for relevant professional courses, statutory bodies such as the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) and the Bar Council of India (BCI).
Academics
The university is organised into faculties and departments covering a broad set of disciplines. Programmes commonly offered at such institutions in West Bengal include:
- Engineering and technology, including computer science, information technology and electronics
- Computer applications (BCA, MCA)
- Management studies (BBA, MBA)
- Allied health sciences and paramedical courses
- Basic sciences and mathematics
- Humanities, social sciences and journalism
- Law and legal studies
The university also supports research leading to the award of doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees in selected disciplines.
Campus
The campus is situated in Barasat, on the northern fringe of the Kolkata metropolitan area, and is connected to central Kolkata by road and by the Sealdah–Bangaon suburban railway line. The location places it within the wider higher-education landscape of greater Kolkata, which includes several public and private universities.
Significance
Brainware University is among the cohort of state private universities that emerged in West Bengal following legislation enabling private participation in higher education. Such universities have contributed to expanding access to professional and technical education in the state, particularly in fields linked to information technology, management and health sciences.
