Overview

Kanneganti Brahmanandam, popularly known by the mononym Brahmanandam, is an Indian actor and comedian who works predominantly in Telugu cinema. Widely regarded as one of the most prolific comedians in Indian film history, he has appeared in well over a thousand films across his career. He is a recipient of the Padma Shri, awarded by the Government of India in 2009 for his contributions to the arts.

Background and early life

Brahmanandam was born on 1 February 1956 in Sattenapalli, a town in the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. He completed a Master of Arts degree in Telugu literature and worked as a Telugu lecturer at a college in Attili, West Godavari district, before turning to performance full-time. His early platform was the Telugu television programme Pakapakalu, where he performed mimicry and comic monologues that brought him to public attention.

Entry into cinema

Brahmanandam's entry into Telugu films came through director Jandhyala, who introduced him in Aha Naa Pellanta! (1987). Jandhyala, known for situational comedy, gave him several early roles that established his screen persona of an exaggerated, often pompous bumbler whose dialogue delivery and physical reactions became central to the humour.

Rise to prominence

Through the late 1980s and 1990s, Brahmanandam became a fixture in Telugu commercial cinema, playing comic tracks parallel to the main plot. Directors such as E. V. V. Satyanarayana and S. V. Krishna Reddy used him extensively. He developed a versatile range, taking on roles as bogus godmen, hapless fathers-in-law, corrupt officials, eccentric villains, and parodies of stock film figures.

Mainstream collaborations

From the 2000s onward, Brahmanandam became closely associated with films headlined by stars including Chiranjeevi, Pawan Kalyan, Mahesh Babu, Allu Arjun, Ravi Teja, Venkatesh, and Nagarjuna. Frequent collaborations with directors such as Trivikram Srinivas, Puri Jagannadh, V. V. Vinayak, and Anil Ravipudi yielded several successful comedy tracks. Notable films featuring him include Money (1993), Aa Naluguru (2004), Dubai Seenu (2007), King (2008), Kick (2009), Adhurs (2010), Dookudu (2011), Race Gurram (2014), and Attarintiki Daredi (2013).

Brahmanandam is married to Lakshmi, and the couple have two sons. The elder son, Raja Goutham, has worked as an actor in Telugu films.
