Background

Bolgatty Island lies in the estuarine waters of Kochi, close to the mainland city and to Willingdon Island and Fort Kochi. The palace was constructed by Dutch traders during the period of Dutch presence in Malabar, when the Dutch East India Company (VOC) controlled significant trading interests along the Kerala coast following their displacement of the Portuguese in the mid-17th century. The mansion later served as the residence of the Dutch governors and commanders associated with Cochin.

After the British succeeded the Dutch in the region, the property passed into British use. It served as the residence of the British Resident to the Kingdom of Cochin, and the surrounding grounds were developed with gardens and recreational facilities. Following Indian independence and the integration of the princely states, the palace and its estate eventually came under the Government of Kerala.

The palace and its grounds

The building is a two-storeyed structure displaying Dutch colonial architecture, with sloping tiled roofs, wide verandahs, and high-ceilinged interiors typical of European tropical residences of the colonial era. The estate around the palace includes landscaped lawns, a small golf course, and waterfront frontage offering views of the Kochi harbour and shipping channel.

As a heritage hotel

The palace was converted into a heritage hotel and is operated by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation, the public sector tourism body of the Government of Kerala. The complex includes guest rooms in the heritage building itself, additional cottages and lake-facing villas on the island, banquet and conference facilities, and dining outlets. The property is accessed by ferry from the Ernakulam mainland and is also reachable by road.

Significance

Bolgatty Palace is considered one of the notable surviving examples of Dutch civil architecture in India and is a recognised heritage attraction in Kochi's tourism circuit, which also includes Fort Kochi, Mattancherry Palace, and the Jewish Quarter. Its location on a private island in the Kochi backwaters has made it a venue for tourism, weddings, and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) events promoted by Kerala Tourism.
