Overview

Biswa Bangla Biswabidyalay is a state-aided university situated in Bolpur, in the Birbhum district of West Bengal. It was established in 2020 under the Biswa Bangla Biswabidyalay Act, 2017, enacted by the Government of West Bengal. The university was set up in memory of Rabindranath Tagore, the poet and Nobel laureate associated with the cultural heritage of Bolpur and Santiniketan.

The institution has been envisaged as a Centre of Excellence devoted to teaching, learning and research across various branches of study. Its campus is being developed near the Visva-Bharati campus in Bolpur, and the State Government has allocated ₹360 crore towards establishing the infrastructure required for the university.

In 2021, the then Vice-Chancellor Swapan Dutta announced that the colleges in Birbhum district would be brought under the jurisdiction of Biswa Bangla Biswabidyalay. The succeeding Vice-Chancellor, Professor Maiti, has held discussions with the principals of these colleges with regard to implementing the affiliation arrangement.
