Overview

Biswa Bangla is a state-owned brand and retail venture established by the Government of West Bengal to promote and market traditional handicrafts, handlooms and textiles produced in the state. The brand functions as a unified showcase for products created by artisans and weavers across the districts of West Bengal, with retail outlets in major Indian cities and at international airports.

Background

West Bengal has a long-standing tradition of textile crafts, including Baluchari and Jamdani sarees, Kantha embroidery, Dhokra metal casting, terracotta from Bankura, and Madurkathi mats, among others. Many of these crafts are practised in rural clusters and have been recognised under the Geographical Indication (GI) framework. Biswa Bangla was conceived as a state-promoted platform to provide artisans with formal retail channels, fair pricing, and brand identity, while making authentic Bengal craft products accessible to urban and international consumers.

Establishment and operations

The Biswa Bangla brand was launched by the Government of West Bengal under the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The brand is administered through state agencies linked to the departments of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Textiles. Stores stock items sourced directly from artisan clusters across the state, including sarees, stoles, dress material, home furnishings, jewellery, leather goods, food items such as packaged sweets and tea, and decorative crafts.

Retail presence

Biswa Bangla operates flagship stores in Kolkata, including outlets in the city's central business areas and at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. Outlets have also been opened in other Indian cities such as New Delhi, and at selected airport locations to reach travellers and tourists.

The brand lends its name to the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, a large convention and exhibition complex located in New Town, Kolkata, which hosts state-organised events including the Bengal Global Business Summit. The Biswa Bangla Gate (also known as Kolkata Gate) in New Town is another landmark associated with the branding initiative.

Significance

Biswa Bangla is significant as one of the more visible state-led efforts in India to consolidate regional craft traditions under a single retail and marketing identity. By formalising procurement from artisan clusters, the initiative aims to support rural livelihoods, preserve traditional skills, and promote the cultural heritage of Bengal. It also serves as a soft-power instrument for the state government, projecting Bengal's craft economy at trade fairs, summits and tourism gateways.
