Background
Vidyapati, often honoured with the titles Maithil Kavi Kokil and Abhinav Jayadeva, was a court poet who flourished in the 14th–15th centuries under the Oiniwar dynasty rulers of Mithila. He composed in Maithili, Sanskrit and Avahattha, and is celebrated for his devotional and lyrical padas, especially those addressed to Shiva and to Radha–Krishna. His verses had a lasting influence on Bengali, Odia and Assamese Vaishnava traditions as well as on later Maithili literature.
Local tradition in the Madhubani region identifies the village of Bisfi as Vidyapati's birthplace and ancestral seat. The site referred to as Vidyapati Dih, literally the "mound" or homestead site of Vidyapati, marks the spot regarded as the location of his family's residence.
Site and significance
The Dih functions as both a literary memorial and a place of local veneration. It draws visitors interested in the cultural heritage of Mithila, students of Maithili literature, and devotees connected with the Vaishnava and Shaiva traditions that drew on Vidyapati's compositions. The wider Madhubani region, known for Madhubani painting and Maithili cultural traditions, provides the immediate context within which the site is preserved.
Commemorative observances connected with Vidyapati, including Vidyapati Smriti Parv and similar literary gatherings, are held in Bihar and the broader Mithila region, and Bisfi is frequently referenced in such cultural programmes as the poet's native place.
Geography
Bisfi lies in Madhubani district in the northern part of Bihar, in the cultural and linguistic zone of Mithila that extends across parts of Bihar and the Tarai region of Nepal. The district headquarters is the town of Madhubani, and the area falls within the Darbhanga division.
