Location and setting

Birnagar lies in the Ranaghat subdivision of Nadia district, in the southern part of West Bengal. The station serves the town of Birnagar and the surrounding rural localities, providing local connectivity for commuters and residents travelling within the Sealdah suburban network and onward to Krishnanagar, Murshidabad and Lalgola.

Line and services

The station is situated on the Sealdah–Lalgola line, a route that branches northward from Ranaghat Junction. The line runs through Nadia and Murshidabad districts, connecting Kolkata's Sealdah terminal with stations such as Krishnanagar City Junction, Plassey, Berhampore Court and Lalgola. Birnagar is served principally by Sealdah–Ranaghat–Krishnanagar–Lalgola electric multiple unit (EMU) local trains, which form part of the Kolkata suburban railway network.

Background

The railway corridor through Ranaghat and Krishnanagar dates to the latter half of the 19th century, when the Eastern Bengal Railway extended its lines into the interior of present-day Nadia and Murshidabad districts. The route was later electrified in stages as part of the expansion of suburban services around Kolkata, and the section through Birnagar today carries 25 kV AC traction.

Significance

As a wayside station on a busy commuter corridor, Birnagar plays a role in everyday passenger movement between the towns of Nadia district and Kolkata. The station provides accessibility to nearby educational institutions, markets, and administrative centres in Ranaghat and Krishnanagar.
