Overview

Birla Mandir is the collective name given to a number of Hindu temples built by the Birla family in different cities across India. These temples are dedicated to various Hindu deities and have come to be associated with the philanthropic activities of the family in the field of religious architecture.

The temples are generally constructed in white marble or sandstone, and are noted for their detailed craftsmanship. They are typically situated in prominent locations within their respective cities and are designed to accommodate a large number of visitors. Worship, rituals and religious discourses at these temples are organised in a structured manner.

The first Birla Mandir was built in Delhi in 1939, jointly by Jugal Kishore Birla, his brothers and their father. Subsequent temples in other cities were built and are managed by different branches of the Birla family. In the case of the two temples at Varanasi, the Birlas contributed alongside other donors towards the cost of construction.
