Geography
Bina lies in the northern part of Sagar district, on the boundary between the Malwa plateau and the Bundelkhand region. The terrain is largely flat with black cotton soil, typical of the Vindhyan tableland. The Bina river, a tributary of the Betwa, flows in the vicinity and gives the town its name.
Transport
Railways
Bina Junction is one of the most important railway junctions in central India. It lies on the Delhi–Chennai main line of the Indian Railways and serves as the meeting point of routes connecting Jhansi, Bhopal, Katni and Guna. Because of this strategic position, a large number of long-distance Mail, Express and Superfast trains halt at the junction. The station and adjoining yard host locomotive sheds and crew-change facilities, and Bina has historically been a significant railway township with colonies, schools and a divisional hospital catering to railway employees.
Roads
Bina is connected by state highways to Sagar, Khurai, Ashoknagar and Guna, and lies within reach of National Highway corridors linking Bhopal with Jhansi.
Economy
Bina Refinery
The Bina Refinery, located at Agasod near the town, is operated by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited following the merger of Bharat Oman Refineries Limited. Commissioned for commercial production in 2011, the refinery processes imported crude oil received through a dedicated pipeline from a single point mooring at Vadinar on the Gujarat coast. It produces petrol, diesel, LPG, naphtha and other petroleum products, and is a significant contributor to the state's industrial output. A petrochemical expansion project at the site has been announced by BPCL.
Other industry and trade
Apart from the refinery and the railway establishment, the local economy is supported by trade in agricultural produce — chiefly wheat, soybean, gram and pulses — and by small-scale industries, transport services and ancillary units linked to the refinery.
Civic administration
Bina is administered by a Municipal Council (Nagar Palika Parishad) under the Madhya Pradesh Municipalities Act. It forms part of the Bina Vidhan Sabha constituency, which sends a representative to the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly, and lies within the Sagar Lok Sabha constituency for elections to the Indian Parliament.
Education and institutions
Educational facilities in Bina include government and private higher secondary schools, Kendriya Vidyalaya and railway schools, and degree colleges affiliated to universities in Madhya Pradesh. The town also hosts a railway divisional hospital and the BORL township hospital, alongside government health centres.
Demographics
The population is predominantly Hindi-speaking, with Bundeli widely used in everyday life. Hindus form the majority, with Muslim, Jain and Sikh minorities. The Jain community has a long-standing presence in the surrounding region, reflected in temples and pilgrimage sites in nearby areas.
