Geography
Bilara lies in the eastern portion of Jodhpur district, towards the boundary with Pali and Nagaur districts. The terrain is characterised by flat to gently undulating plains typical of the Marwar tract, with sandy soils and limited surface water. The Luni river and its tributaries traverse parts of the tehsil, supporting seasonal agriculture. The climate is arid to semi-arid, with hot summers, short and limited monsoons, and cool winters.
Administration
As a tehsil, Bilara functions as a revenue and administrative subdivision of Jodhpur district. The tehsil office handles land records, revenue collection, and related civil administration for the villages within its jurisdiction. Local self-government in the town is provided through a municipal body, while surrounding villages are administered through panchayati raj institutions, including gram panchayats and the panchayat samiti.
Economy
The local economy is largely agrarian, with crops such as bajra (pearl millet), wheat, mustard, cumin, and pulses being cultivated depending on the season and irrigation availability. Animal husbandry, particularly the rearing of cattle, sheep, and goats, is an important supplementary activity. Bilara also functions as a trading centre for agricultural produce from nearby villages, and stone quarrying and processing are notable industrial activities in the broader area, given Rajasthan's significance as a producer of sandstone and related building materials.
Transport
Bilara is connected by road to Jodhpur city to the west and to other towns in central Rajasthan to the east. State highways and district roads link the town with neighbouring tehsils and with the wider road network of the region. Rail connectivity is provided through stations on the broad-gauge network operated by Indian Railways serving the Jodhpur–Marwar Junction corridor.
Culture
The population of the area predominantly speaks Marwari, a dialect of Rajasthani, alongside Hindi, which is used in administration and education. Local culture reflects the broader traditions of Marwar, including folk music, festivals such as Teej, Gangaur, Holi, and Diwali, and traditional crafts. Temples and shrines in and around the town are focal points of community religious life.
